With the help of a great team, The George Inn is a family run, village inn in the heart of Blackawton’s friendly community, set in the South Hams countryside near Dartmouth.
There has been a Public Ale house on the site of the George Inn that we know and love today since St. Michael’s Church was built in the 14th Century. As with many Devon villages, prosperous from the wool trade in the 13th century, the pub provided accommodation for the workers that came in to build the church. Like “The George”, many pubs were built on land originally owned by the Church, hence the high number of “Church House Inns” in and around Devon.
Renamed “The George Inn” during the reign of George III, it was later rebuilt after a fire in 1939. The pub was also a rallying point for the forced evacuation of the parish in WWII.
After the war, the pub became a popular local venue for many celebrations and meetings in the first-floor assembly rooms. After the village hall was opened in 1981, the need for the assembly rooms was greatly diminished, and when Heavitree Brewery later sold the pub for redevelopment, half the building was sold off as houses and the first floor was reconfigured into five en-suite guest rooms. These now provide comfortable 3-star accommodation for the many and varied visitors to Blackawton.

Ruth Coe – Proprietor
Ruth has been proprietor since March 2002, with tenants from August 2005 until October 2008, when Ruth & late husband Vic decided it was best for the business to return. Ruth’s two daughters, Merry and Fern, now play a major role together with son in law Bert. Ruth is breakfast chef on Sunday and Mondays, as well as our person behind the bar Sunday lunch.
Merry Hall – Assistant Manager
Merry, Ruth's younger daughter has been a member of the team since 2012, a licence holder who is welcoming and caring for diners and drinkers alike. She, along with Stacey has recently taken on more responsibility and is enjoying the opportunity to take a bigger role in the business in return for a G&T now and then.
Stacey Kendall – Assistant Manager
Stacey joined the team in summer 2014, and has been gratefully received by the team and customers alike for her friendly welcoming smile. Her skills front of house and behind the scenes keep us sane and our coffee returns the favour for her!
Sue Radford – Front of House
Sue has just joined the team but it well known in the village as a welcoming, bubbly member of the team.
Jenny Koo – Kitchen manager & head chef
Our creative kitchen manager has a passion for free style cooking to suit all preferences. Her speciality is in far eastern flavours, but enjoys making our traditional home coked pub grub just as much.
Samantha Airzee – Kitchen assistant
Our princess Manthie who has just finished her business course at South Devon College puts in her all; whether its promoting the business through social media, housekeeping, cooking in the kitchen or training behind the bar.
Louise Rodwell - Kitchen assistant

Fern Eden – Head Housekeeper
Since 2008 Fern has organised accommodation, refurbishment and ensured high standards throughout the premises. Keeping her younger sister Merry in check is no small task but even with a young family Fern manages to help steer us all in the right direction.
